Minor Update of 2 Char Designs [19 Sep 2007|02:53pm]
In case anyone still watches this thing, haha.

I'm re-doing/updating Sabasi & Mtawa's designs.

Nothing major, I just wasn't happy with small things from day one, but I put them out there anyway just because I wanted to have the whole crew done despite not being happy with them.

In the time away from the computer, I think I've found a solution to one of the major things that was bothering me, so I'll be tweaking them accordingly :3

Minor changes, I might redo the rest's character sheets as well.

Sabasi's Fascination with Shenzi [25 Oct 2006|10:39pm]
(Rephrased from Lilymud with greater clarity and more detail...)

Sabasi is obsessed with Shenzi in an adolescent/teenage "I'm too disassociative and sullen to deign to care about normal people, but whoa hormones, so lets channel them at the most powerful, un-normal female hyena in the clan" sort of way. o_o The overall effect of this on him is for the worst, it just solidifies for him tendencies that were brewing but could possibly have been minimized if they weren't re-inforced by what he saw in her, the hyenas around her, and Scar's "court". The obsession does loose some of it's edge eventually, but vestiges of it cling--that's probably the first thing he and Kasiri fall out over, Kasiri starts feeling the sad state of affairs and wondering how competent Shenzi is and Sabasi jumps down his throat,) ...He just gets older and once the Pridelands stint is done and Shenzi exits the sentiment is...retired from active service. The experience remains with him however and in a small way contributes to his eventual exile from the clan.

Did anything ever come of it? No. He was a teen, and short of being included in the odd mission/assignment as a willing participant, he never makes it into that inner circle of the clan, Shenzi doesn't really know him beyond a name and a face or give him any thought.

(Yes, this journal is still alive :p)

Porch-sitters: Rai & Mtawa's Friendship [26 Jun 2006|01:32pm]
Rai is basically an old "grew up in New York in the 40's" type, turned gossip-monger in his retirement after a lifetime of "knowing so&so" and having little else to do with himself. He doesn't really understand Mtawa, who is a very stay-at-home sort, serious and sometimes over the top fretful, and not at all gregarious. But, they frequently spend much time in each other's company, because the other young hyenas that Rai does understand (like Kasiri,) are out galavanting and he loves having someone to gossip and talk to; meanwhile Mtawa doesn't venture far naturally and doesn't really have friends his own age, and so looks to Rai as a sort of friend/mentor.

Rai's Children [06 Mar 2006|02:11pm]
Family Ties

Lately I've been trying to flesh out Rai's first tier progeny, and rather than invent even more characters than I already have, I've been offering the slots to you guys :3

The List of Rai's children:

Retained for my use
Biashara (Jana's mother)
Wakati (Biashara's twin brother)
(First son)
(Fourth son)

Fostered out (as of 3/6)**
[info]theunknownsoul--Ziraili
[info]criquetin--(offered for future use)

If anyone's not sure what this entails, the answer is nothing, just that if you ever feel like developing a spotted hyena character, there's a place for it guaranteed in my world as Rai's son or daughter. If you want them less tied in, make a son so he'll be living somewhere else away from my characters; if you like the idea of a synthesis, make a daughter, they'll be around during the events of TLK where most my characters are gathered, too.
All I ask for them is some credibility in their designs and that their stories should you invent any aren't too far fetched :3

**[info]couragose, you're the only person watching this LJ that I didn't offer to--you're not around TLKFAA much so I didn't think you'd be interested, but if you are there's a spot for you :-)
[info]derangedlioness, I'm working on a synopsis of Ziada's family, I'll probably put it up over the weekend.

The Lovers: Ziada and Kasiri [02 Mar 2006|11:23am]
Since Lilymud inadvertantly prompted me to phrase it, I thought I'd post here a little bit about the nature of Ziada and Kasiri's relationship.

While essentially friends, they're a typical on-again-off-again sort of couple. Not exactly love-hate, but the best way to describe it is more that each refuses to need the other ever, hence they quite often have long periods of not being with each other (not to mention spats and bickering,)...until they end up together again for a while, and then repeat.
So they ARE a couple, even if they aren't seen together often.

Jana's Mother [05 Feb 2006|03:57pm]
(Originally posted in [info]cleargreenwater 12/30/05.)

"...So I think I'm going to dust off Biashara, a character I created over 2 years ago for a mercifully discontinued fanfic about the hyena trio, and re-cast her as Jana's mother.

The age would need to be fixed a bit, and some relationships erased, but it would work. It's an established part of Jana's story that Banzai is her daddy but she needs a mother, and in that ancient fanfic before I abandoned it I intended Biashara to bear a cub to Banzai's brother, so it's not an extremely disruptive change to either character. Also, in the fanfic it was forecast for Biashara to be quite an unfortunate creature, while Jana's story is that the cub's mother disappears shortly before Simba returns, a demise very much in line with the old vision of Biashara. Added to this, that Biashara was a frumpy sort of hyena and not a very strong personality, I don't think adding her would effect my current cast of characters much at all, except to give Jana a mother and Rai a daughter."

Someone old for someone new?

* * * * * * *

As of the current date I haven't yet decided what exactly to do with this idea. Though I do now regard a (slightly modified) Biashara as a distinct plausibility for Jana's mother, I'm not ready to introduce/solidify any new characters just now, it's an exhausting process and that I don't feel like undertaking in the near future.

How the Cast Assembles [04 Feb 2006|03:16pm]
(Originally appeared in Lilymud thread 11/4/05.)

The Basic Premise:

Ajali is the key/main character/focal point/connecting factor/unofficial matriarch for all the other characters. Some of them come into her orbit at different times, but they all are arranged together under her for a period of time. There are other connections, too--Ziada and Kasiri are a couple for a time, and Jana is also Rai's grand-daughter--and some of them will eventually go their own way; but that's the cornerstone of my little universe.

The Lion King Connection [04 Feb 2006|01:13am]
(Originally appeared in Lilymud thread 11/4/05.)

The Complete, Cohesive & Concise Map of TLK Movie Interlaces

Ajali finds shelter with the Elephant Graveyard Clan (being quite unwelcome in other clans, as she is female & therefore competition for status/power,) in exchange for serving as a "Sponsor"--something like a matron or resident assistant, a female responsible for overseeing new arrivals until they are adjusted/absorbed into the clan's structure, and afterward that their interests are being looked after &/or have some representation in the clan, as young men are pretty disenfranchised critters in hyena society (retirees, likewise). Ajali's little cell sticks together after Simba returns and the hyena super-army busts into a thousand panicked pieces.

Jana is another one of Banzai's children. Nothing special, though--as the highest ranking male in the clan, Banzai probably has several daughters besides her, and they don't interact with each other because hyena fathers are (enforced) deadbeats.

Closer to little cubbie Jana is Rai. Rai is her grandfather on her mother's side who has been a part of the Elephant Graveyard Clan through three matriarchs, & while he would generally be as disinterested in a cub like Jana as the next male, he is also an old soldier & when his daughter (Jana's mother) dissappears without a trace, he begins to take a watchful interest in his grandchild and her safety.

Kasiri, Mtawa, & Sabasi--Since male hyenas emigrate to different clans on maturity anyway, these three are among the very many that set out for the Elephant Graveyard Clan after hearing about it's newly aquired lands & marvelous resources. (This is how I reconcile the natural behavior of hyenas, where females are more in evidence, with the fact that almost all the hyenas in the fight scene at the end seem to be boys. The American West was similarly unbalanced for a good 20 years when it was being settled, though of course informed by a rather different set of gender assumptions.)
Sabasi additionally harbors an adolescent obsession with Shenzi and is, in my mind, is one of the five hyenas that give Nala such a run for her money in TLK6NA before being chased off by Ni & Sarafina.

Ziada is the only one that has nothing to do with the canon TLK world.

TLKFAA Character Info: Ajali [03 Feb 2006|09:31am]
Short Character Description--Ajali
First appeared on TLK FanArt Archive

A solid woman in her early to mid 40s, Ajali is a rarity among hyenas, a female who has spent much of her adult life as a transient unattached to a clan out of a sense of propriety and purpose both. Stays for a while with the Elephant Graveyard Clan as a Sponsor/matron. Gathers an assorted trouppe that slowly comes to form its own little clan.
That's the condensed version of course ;-)

Inspired by my late dog.

TLKFAA Character Info: Jana [03 Feb 2006|08:40am]
Short Character Description--Jana
First appeared on TLK FanArt Archive

One of Banzai's cubs born during Scar's reign, Jana is more importantly one of Rai's grandchildren through the all-important mother's side, however much she may occasionally act like her sire. While things are decent in the Pridelands, Jana stays with her mother Biashara for what the unstable parent is worth, but when starvation and unrest settles again on the clan as Simba's return approaches, her mother disappears for good. Rai takes more of an interest in the cub after that & while she officially goes to an aunt's custody, Jana frequently spends time with Ajali's crew until Rai finally completely commandeers the brash, bold child at the hyena's exile.

TLKFAA Character Info: Kasiri [03 Feb 2006|07:53am]
Short Character Description--Kasiri
First appeared on TLK FanArt Archive

Kasiri is one of the many young men that flocked to join the Elephant Graveyard Clan after Shenzi & Scar took over the Pridelands. He is a bit of a cad--capricious, bold, & revelling in any noteriety he can get--though essentially not bad, however wild and "loose canon" he many seem. He befriends Sabasi when they are both assigned to Ajali's supervision, and despite a 3 to 4 season age difference, the two are inseperable for much of their teen/young/emerging adult years, wreaking havoc & irritating lions & responsible hyenas alike. Eventually however the friends drift as Kasiri's motivation becomes more & more about self-aggrandizing hijinx & attention then any deep-seated discontent, and indeed his later life is spent much after the fashion of a knight-errant. He touches down in a few different clans (such as Ziada's where he gains her regards ;3,) before settling.

TLKFAA Character Info: Mtawa [03 Feb 2006|06:55am]
Short Character Description--Mtawa
First appeared on TLK FanArt Archive

Devoutly religious after an early cubhood near death experience (an event/trait for which the cub was then named,) that may have made him a sensitive/slightly psychic, Mtawa is older than average when he finally leaves his birth clan to seek the Elephant Graveyard Clan. Once there, no one really knows what to do with the serious new recruit, so he is promptly farmed out to sponsorship. Meticulous, awkward, fussy & quiet, he is vaguely Zazu-like to begin with and comes to be a trusted aide. Pensive, tries to do his best; not a very impressive figure, he's the most busted on of the group, but loyal to make up for it. He is a doomsayer by nature, however, which often obscures any useful application of his psychic impressions, if so they actually are.

TLKFAA Character Info: Rai [03 Feb 2006|05:59am]
Short Character Description--Rai
First appeared on TLK FanArt Archive

An older sort whose called the Elephant Graveyard Clan home for over 30 seasons, Rai is in his late 50s with 6 children and 15 grandchildren to his credit when the Clan aligns with Scar. Lost in the rush of revolution when the size of the clan nearly triples with the influx of new hyenas, he takes it with good grace as a sign to enter into a quiet retirement and attaches himself to Ajali for that purpose. When Simba returns & the massive hyena conglomerate shatters into smaller cells, he opts to remain with Ajali rather than returning to the original Elephant Graveyard Clan, and continues to serve as a prominent male figure to Kasiri, Mtawa, Sabasi for as long as they are around, and something of a parent to grand-daughter Jana.

TLKFAA Characters Info: Sabasi [03 Feb 2006|04:06am]
Short Character Description--Sabasi
First appeared on TLK FanArt Archive

The youngest of Ajali's charges, & one of the youngest migrants to join the Elephant Graveyard Clan in general with an age equivalent to 14 or so on his arrival. Best friends with Kasiri, with whom he shares a similar love of trouble-making, Sabasi is by far the more intense of the two, brooding, bitter, jealous, & angry, tendencies which only grow more marked as he ages. Harbours an adolescent obsession for Shenzi which develops into a love of power and considerable disdain for most other hyenas. As an adult he is a lifelong drifter--callous & self-serving, if not completely vicious or even cruel--finding all clans he visits equally contemptible.

TLKFAA Character Info: Ziada [03 Feb 2006|03:09am]
Short Character Description--Ziada
First appeared on TLK FanArt Archive

Ziada is the only one of Ajali's caravan that has no connection to the Elephant Graveyard Clan. Adventurous and perhaps overly emotional, her family is notoriously on the outs with the clan and under constant suspicion after a history of dissent and rebellion. She takes Kasiri as a mate for a time when he stays with her clan , and after a stunt gone bad when her future status seems certain to be unbearable, Ziada walks and searches out Ajali's small clan after hearing of it from him. Whereas most hyenas would be thrown into utter turmoil by having to leave their clan irretrievably, the young woman welcomes the change in lifestyle and becomes Ajali's unspoken second in command after probationary mistrust. She is easily the best hunter of the group, having fended for her desposed family throughout her "teen" years.
